Event Details
Researchers and their non-academic partners, including community members, government policymakers, and non-profits, collaborate throughout all stages of a project. While they typically share common objectives and values of the research endeavors, disagreements may arise regarding timelines, research methods, knowledge products, and other aspects. Although such conflicts have the potential to strain relationships, they also present opportunities to deepen understanding, clarify goals, promote equity, and enhance the positive social impact of the research.
In this introductory workshop, researchers and research staff will have the opportunity to explore the nature and impact of conflict on teams. Using the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) participants will learn to identify 5 approaches to conflict, personal tendencies in conflict, and team dynamics when engaged in managing conflicts. Equipped with this shared language and understanding about conflict, research teams can intentionally handle conflict in assertive and respectful ways.

Speaker
Allison Rennie, MFA, brings 30 years of experience leading small groups, and training leaders. They are an animateur based in Naramata, BC who is passionate about experiential education and aligning values with leadership behaviours. Allison has facilitated leadership learning courses and retreats for UBC and UVIC, not-for-profits, and in progressive faith based settings. A good mystery, a great movie, a fresh loaf of bread, a moment of learning, a good question, big work and a deep conversation – all of this is fuel for Allison’s creativity! The gifts of group facilitation, hosting important conversation, and serious play are all brought to the table in their approach as an animateur
