Mitigating friction and wear in transportation applications is critical to improving the longevity of the rail infrastructure, as well as reducing the environmental impact of rail transport through a reduction in energy losses due to wheels/track friction. In the case of greases, nanoparticle-enhanced ones have been shown to possess promising tribological properties. Nanoparticle-enhanced lubricants have been shown to mitigate friction without needing many environmentally harmful additives in fully formulated greases and oils, as well as impart improved wear-resistant characteristics. This research represents a new breakthrough in this technology, allowing for the advancement of this type of nano-enhanced lubricants and greases.
