Yasir Mohamud

Project Description

Dr. Yasir Mohamud is an early career researcher at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI) – St. Paul’s Hospital, where he is the recipient of the prestigious Michael Smith Health Research BC / St. Paul’s Foundation / Centre for Heart Lung Innovation Research Trainee award. Dr. Mohamud is also the recipient of the inaugural CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award.
Yasir has over a decade of experience in academic research at top Canadian institutions. He obtained his BSc (2012) and MSc (2015) degrees in the field of biochemistry at the University of Ottawa before relocating to western Canada to pursue PhD training (2016-2021) at the University of British Columbia. During his doctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Honglin Luo, his research identified novel mechanisms by which enteroviruses hijack important cellular pathways such as autophagy to facilitate disease pathogenesis.
As a Health Research BC Researcher, Dr. Mohamud will build upon his previous expertise to elucidate pathological mechanisms of myocarditis and viral-induced heart failure.
