PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD), University of Victoria is seeking applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) in the area of decolonizing praxis within post-secondary environments, ideally starting on January 1, 2021. The successful candidate will be a junior scholar possessing a strong background in Indigenous and decolonizing methodologies.

LOCATION

The University of Victoria is located on the lands of the Lkwungen peoples – home to the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ First Nations. UVic is committed to creating cultural safe learning, research and working environments. The Faculty of Human and Social Development offers graduate programs in Indigenous Governance and Social Dimensions of Health along with undergraduate and graduate programs in Child and Youth Care, Health Information Science, Nursing, Public Health and Social Policy, Social Work and Public Administration.

AVAILABLE FUNDING

This fellowship will be financially supported for two years, with a possibility of renewal for one additional year, subject to the availability of funds and positive evaluations. The successful applicant will receive a $50,000 fellowship per year and an additional $5,000 per year in research funds to support activities related to the fellowship. Any teaching the PDF agrees to undertake will be in the form of paid sessional instruction.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Depending on an applicant’s previous experience and self-identified learning goals, opportunities will be available for engagement in a variety of Indigenous community-led activities, university initiatives, as well as teaching, mentoring and knowledge mobilization opportunities.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will:

  • pursue and nurture relationships and collaborations with local Indigenous communities, knowledge holders, faculty, and students;
  • undertake independent research and scholarship on decolonial praxis in HSD, with supervision from Dr. Charlotte Loppie and Dr. Nick Claxton;
  • prepare and submit applications for external (e.g. SSHRC or CIHR) post-doctoral funding;
  • prepare and submit at least one application for project funding;
  • support the development of an undergraduate land-based course pilot;
  • co-develop and facilitate an HSD land-based graduate research gathering;
  • co-develop and facilitate a land-based decolonizing retreat for HSD faculty and staff.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
  • Completed PhD no more than 3 years before the date of acceptance, with relevant focus on decolonizing praxis.
  • Demonstrated scholarly and research record and/or potential.
  • Experience working respectfully with Indigenous communities, collectives, organizations and/or Nations.
