summary

The Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology is a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative environment with strong emphasis on basic research and translating those findings into practical applications to prevent and treat microbial infections. Baylor College of Medicine is located in the vibrant Texas Medical Center, which is home to multiple cutting-edge research institutions, and provides a rich and stimulating environment conducive to intellectual development and nurtures a team science approach. Will benefit from collaborations with leading experts in microbial pathogenesis, with a focus on virus-host interactions and viral pathogenesis, and biomedical engineering to develop biomimetic human organoid cultures to understand infectious diseases.

A Research Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Mary Estes, Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology and a NIH funded Human Biomimetics for Mucosal Infections Cooperative Research Center. Research in the Estes lab pioneered use of human organoid cultures for discovering mechanisms that regulate host-virus interactions and pathogenesis of human enteric viruses. The Research Associate will receive advanced training, be an integral member of our established research team, and will develop next generation organoid cultures for studies on enteric viral infections.

job duties

  • Designs, directs, and conducts specialized and advanced research experiments.
  • Works independently and in conjunction with others who are part of the human biomimetic research team.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data.
  • Establishes new research protocols and procedures.
  • Summarizes research findings in lab meetings and local and NIH-sponsored meetings.

minimum qualifications

preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in biomedical sciences.
  • Strong background in virology, molecular biology, cell biology and immunology.
  • Strong organization skills, highly motivated, and career-oriented.
  • Previous experience in mucosal viral infections in animal models and primary cell cultures.
  • Experience with producing and using viruses including those made by reverse genetics to study mechanisms of pathogenesis.
  • Previous experience in RNA Seq analyses is ideal, but not required.
