Hear from a panel of former UBC postdocs about the transition from a Postdoctoral Fellowship to a post-PDF career in non-academic fields.

MODERATOR

Yongzheng (Parker) Li

Ph.D Candidate, Department of Political Science

Yongzheng (Parker) Li is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed his BSc. in Global China Studies from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Parker’s research lies at the intersection of comparative politics and international relations, with a regional focus on China and Africa. His dissertation examines the influence of individual-level interaction and policy framing on public perception. His research has received different fellowships and scholarships, including the UBC 4-Year Fellowship, Charles CC-Sophia Wong Fellowship, and the President's Academic Excellence Initiative Ph.D. Award at UBC.

PANELISTS

Dr. Davoud Heidari

Research Officer, National Research Council Canada

Dr. Davoud Heidari (Davoud) is Research Officer working with the Construction Research Centre at the National Research Council Canada (NRC). He Completed his PhD in 2015 at the University of Tehran, Iran. Then he immigrated to Canada and started his first postdoctoral position at the Universite de Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, QC (2016-2018). After two years and nine months, he moved to Kelowna to start his second postdoctoral position at the UBCO (2019-2021). He worked for a consultancy company (project-based) for a couple of months and then started working for a private company in Kelowna, called GreenStep Solutions Inc. After one year of working with this company, he moved to Ottawa to start his new journey with the Federal government and work as a Research Officer. His main area of expertise is environmental life cycle assessment and carbon footprinting.

 

Dr. Ji-Young Kim

Regulatory Scientist - Project Manager, Canadian Food Inspection Agency

Dr. Ji-Young Kim

Dr. Ji-Young Kim is a Regulatory Scientist at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, where she is engaged in SARS-CoV-2 surveillance among wildlife populations across Canada. Additionally, she is involved in the development of a point-of-need diagnostic assay tailored for field sampling. Prior to assuming her current role, Ji-Young completed her postdoctoral research at the Heart Lung Institute (UBC), where she worked on developing a blood-based diagnostic assay designed for the exclusionary diagnosis of acute cellular rejection in adult heart transplant patients. Her postdoctoral research focused on understanding what constitutes optimal immune suppression following transplantation and to translate these discoveries into biomarkers that can improve transplant care. In terms of her career trajectory, Ji-Young has gained experience in various settings, including academia, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. She has worked across a wide spectrum of disciplines, including neuroscience and infectious disease, in both scientific and non-scientific roles. Recognizing the non-linear nature of career progression for individuals with PhDs, she enjoys sharing her experiences with others and exploring non-traditional career paths.

DELIVERY FORMAT

This panel will be delivered online via Zoom. The following suggestions may help to improve the online experience:

  • Use headphones to reduce noise and avoid feedback between your mic and speaker.
  • Ensure that you are in a quiet location so that the audio does not get polluted with unwanted noise.
  • Keep your microphone on mute unless you are speaking during the session.
  • In case of technical problems, time for plugin downloads, etc., please attempt to log into the Zoom meeting 10-15 minutes before the start. You will be placed in the waiting room until the official start time.
